Action Phase

What Is the Action Phase?

The Action Phase screen (after playing “Strange Necklace”)

This is the second phase of your turn. In this phase, you can play Action Cards and cast their effects.

Using Action Cards

To use an Action Card, drag it from your hand to the ‘Play Area’ in front of you.

  • If an Action Card shows an “AP Cost” of 1 or more, you must spend that many Action Points to play it. (They are spent automatically when you play the card.) If you don't have enough Action Points, you can't use that Action Card.

About Action Points

How to Gain Action Points

  • You can gain Action Points by using other cards with Extra Action Point, +X AP effects, among other ways.
  • There is no limit to how many Action Points you can gain in a single turn.
  • Any unused Action Points disappear when your turn ends.

About Action Cards

Anatomy of an Action Card

AP CostWhen you play this Action Card, you spend the listed number of Action Points.
• If you don't have enough Action Points, you can't play this Action Card.
Star CostWhen you play this Action Card upgraded, you spend the listed number of Wishing Stars.
• If you are short on either Wishing Stars or Action Points, you can't play this Action Card.
EffectThis is the card's ability. When you play this card, its effects are cast in the order written.
• If there is a divider line, only the instructions above the line are cast, and the text below it applies once its condition is met. (See the instructions on each card for details.)
CostWhen you buy this card from the Market, you spend the listed number of Gems.
  • You can still play an Action Card even if you can't cast all of its effects, but any instruction you are required to follow will always be cast.
  • To cast another effect, you must first finish the effect currently being cast. Also, except in special cases, you can't play another Action Card while following an Action Card's instructions. ( Instant and similar effects may cast another effect in the middle of a card effect.)
  • You can look up the icons and terms used in card instructions in each card's guide or in the Match Glossary.
    • Common Keywords:
Extra Card (Draw), +X Card(s) Extra Action Point, +X AP
Extra Buy, +X Buy Extra Gem, +X Gem(s)
Restore HP, +X HP Damage, X Damage
      Gain Wishing Stars, X Wishing Star(s) -
      Remove Instant
Here are some example Action Cards. (Expand the toggles to see them)

Crossroads

This card costs no Action Points to play. When you play it, draw 1 card from your Draw Deck and gain 1 Action Point. (So if you play this card while holding 1 Action Point, you'll have 2 Action Points left.)

You can also spend 1 Wishing Star when you play it. If you do, you gain 4 Action Points instead of 1.

More Action Points let you play more Action Cards, so you can do more on your turn.

Torch

This card costs no Action Points to play. When you play it, draw 1 card from your Draw Deck, then secretly look at 1 card in your Draw Deck. After looking, choose whether to discard it to your Discard Pile or put it back on your Draw Deck.

You can also spend 1 Wishing Star when you play it. If you do, you look at 5 cards instead of 1, and discard or put back as many of them as you like.

If your deck has cards you don't need, discarding them to your Discard Pile helps your deck cycle faster.

Strange Necklace

This card costs 1 Action Point to play. When you play it, choose one option: (1) draw 2 cards from your Draw Deck, or (2) put 1 card from your hand into the Remove Pile to Remove it from your deck.

You can also spend 1 Wishing Star when you play it. If you do, you can draw 5 cards instead of 2, or Remove 3 cards from your hand instead of 1.

If you need more cards in hand right now, drawing is the better choice. If your hand has cards you don't need, it's better to Remove them.

Imagination to Reality

This card costs 1 Action Point to play. When you play it, gain any 1 card from the Market. You can even take an expensive card like “Warhammer”.

You can also spend 1 Wishing Star when you play it. If you do, the card you gain from the Market goes to your hand instead of the Play Area, so you can use it right away.

This effect makes it easy to get expensive, powerful cards, including “Warhammer”.

TIP

  • The order you play Action Cards in matters. Think carefully about which one to play first!
    • If you spend all your Action Points, you can't play other Action Cards that need them. When you have many Action Cards in hand, try playing cards that ‘give Action Points back’ or ‘give lots of Action Points’ first.
    • The order you play cards in can also change how strong their effects are.
